An opportunity to represent the VWL at a local event is coming up October 18th! Julia Parilla has generously reached out to us to participate at this neat event, to take place at Cartem's Donuts on West Broadway. Have you seen Sling's Tasks feature yet? We can utilize this tool to keep on task with library space specific work - Please add anything you can think of! It would be great to establish a regular maintenance/clean-up schedule. We'll also be reviving the Asana again, as it seemed to work well for us planning for the Block Party. Stay tuned!

Alex McDowell received a call from Demeter Press during her shift last week where they offered to donate some books for our collection! Let's make a selection of items we would like to add to our catalogue and send them a list by next Friday, October 13th. Your input would be very much appreciated. Please have a look through their catalogue and email us with anything that stands out to you as aligning with the VWL's values.

Programming & Events

We've had to delay a few of our events for the fall due to conflicting schedules, but JJ's pop-up tattoo event and Emma's Hormonal Health Workshop started off our Fall programming in great style. Much appreciation and love to JJ and Emma for enriching our fall lineup with their creativity and brilliance!

Progress report on events coming up:

We're waiting to hear back from Yaz on all she has lined up for the season. Hearing it's amazing. Really looking forward to continuing this enriching series~
↪ Next steps: Schedule confirmation from Yasmin, Poster design, print, promo

OPEN MIC NIGHTS - facilitated by library member Sera
LAUNCH DATE: November
There's been interest from the public on this kind of event. We are waiting to hear back from Sera on what dates will work for her in November. Sera is an experienced event producer and musician with lots of experience and gear. It would be amazing to have a regular event to showcase all of the talent in our volunteers and members. Open to music, poetry, comedy, anything! It could be a good regular fundraising activity for us. If anyone has easy access to a microphone and amp that could be loaned to us on a regular basis too please let us know. Always good to have options with equipment so we do not have to rely on one person all of the time.

WOMEN'S SUPPORT CIRCLE
LAUNCH DATE: TBA
Several women have forwarded the idea of a women's support circle to meet regularly in the library. There's so much we can all gain from regularly meeting together for the sole purpose of offering one another support and mutual aid. Are there any women who would like to take on getting this group started? Niki, Fiona, Yasmin, Em have all expressed interest in helping organize this in the past. Could be a very casual thing with minimal resources and time put in to set-up.

WOMEN FOR INTELLECTUAL AGITATION - facilitated by Niki, Jen, Alex McDowell and anyone else with an interest!
LAUNCH DATE: TBA
Niki, Jen, and Alex have been meeting periodically since the summer to gather materials and guiding principles for this reading series. Moving away from the traditional bookclub model that often focuses on one dense text at a time, or several academic readings, this program would include more accessible and creative media like podcasts, movies, blog posts, artworks, etc. We are hoping to foster honest discussions in a safe and inclusive space for women, with the goal of organic consciousness raising as the group gets to know one another better and build trust. We have started a google site for WFIA where we would make transparent our process and readings, so that others could follow along remotely as well. If you're interested in this endeavour, please email womenforintellectualagitation@gmail.com

GIRLS CHESS CLUB - facilitated by Rafaela and Em
LAUNCH DATE: TBA

There's been follow-up from a library member on this program! Rafaela will draft a proposal for what we need, but we could also easily incorporate this as a component of the Friday homework club? What do women think? Would it be possible to reach out to local games & hobbies stores to sponsor the event by donating us a few chess boards? Do we need books on this to add to our library catalogue?

OH BABY NUTRITION COLLABORTION - facilitated by Carly Mendes
LAUNCH DATE: TBA
Carly is a holistic nutritionist who specializes in fertility and women's health. She attended Emma's last workshop and was very supportive of her and the library. She is very interested in collaborating on some workshops and events together. Sure to be a huge draw for the library. Maybe a joint event with Emma and Carly? Two powerhouses in one???

STUFF WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR...

  1. a mini-fridge! (so we can keep cream and lunches)
  2. a good laser printer!! (colour & double-side printing capacity would be amazing)
  3. menstrual products
  4. more multi-lingual books!

TL;DR

  1. Party at Jen's house Sunday 5:30 til Late! Potluck and BYOB, though there will be plenty of veggie foods and non-alcoholic drinks provided. Open to all volunteers, friends, partners!
  2. Lots of events and extra-library opportunities to sign up for!
  3. Project management via Sling & Asana - please explore these platforms to add your input and ideas!
