Film Screening: Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise

In Celebrating Black History Month we hope you will join us for a screening of Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, a documentary film (2017) about the author/activist Maya Angelou

About Angelou: “Distinctly referred to as “a redwood tree, with deep roots in American culture,” Dr. Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928-May 28, 2014) led a prolific life. As a singer, dancer, activist, poet and writer, she inspired generations with lyrical modern African-American thought that pushed boundaries. Best known for her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Random House), she gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before”.

Join us afterwards for refreshments + a discussion about the film

Bookwomen of the 1970s: A Conversation

Bookwomen of the 1970s: A Conversation

Following a fabulous event at the Belkin (http://belkin.ubc.ca/current/beginning-with-the-seventies-glut), Vancouver’s legendary bookwomen approached us in hopes of a collaboration. We wanted to continue the conversation about the importance of books and women’s spaces.

Join us for an evening of stories and a lively discussion about the “fast moving feminist scene” (Jeannine Mitchell) of the 1970s. This evening will center on the lives of the women who were involved in Vancouver’s literary, press and magazine culture of the 1970s, including the women who founded and sustained the Vancouver Women’s Bookstore and other feminist projects (such as Pedestal, Pressgang and Makara among others). A Conversation: seeks to engender an intimate setting of storytelling, mediated through a discussion of literature, feminism (past/present), friendship and labour.

***

It is important for (us) younger feminists to continue the dialogue and action of the women who came before us, to continue the legacy of women-run presses, bookstores, libraries and reading groups. We are a part of something greater: feminisms of the present that focus on readership, intellectual freedom and community engagement, Out on the Shelves, L’Eugelionne, Rereading room etc. as a continuation of the activities of the 1970s.

The conversation will begin at 7pm.

***
ABOUT THE VANCOUVER WOMEN'S BOOKSTORE:
The Vancouver Women’s Bookstore opened in downtown Vancouver in 1973, at a time when the women’s movement was producing many feminist books, pamphlets and periodicals that were largely unavailable in local stores. To stock the store, organizers bought books from wholesalers, hand-sold them at women’s cultural events and used the proceeds to buy more until they had enough books and journals to line the shelves. The bookstore was also a space for literary readings, workshops and political organizing meetings, and it became a connection point for the international feminist network. The building was burned down by an arsonist in 1980, and the store moved twice before it closed in 1996.

Podcasts, feminism and popcorn! (This is a free event!)

*no prior feminism experience needed*

ABOUT THE PODCAST
The Guilty Feminist is a live show + podcast in London hosted by Deborah Frances-White and Sofie Hagen that discusses topics “all 21st century feminists agree on” while confessing their insecurities, hypocrisies and fears that underlie their lofty principles. 20+ mio downloads to date.

This event originated with The Feminist Collective Vancouver (as a facebook group...and now a real physical group!) in our own homes, but due to popular demand we’re now bringing the event to a larger space!

WHEN:

6pm - Say hi, have some snacks, tea, decompress from day. Feminist rants welcome!
7pm - Podcast
8pm - Discussion, secret guilty confessions of our own, story sharing

All welcome. Shame-free, anxiety-safe, introvert-friendly (you’re welcome to join the debate but you can keep quiet + just listen as well, too). We don’t have a wheelchair accessible toilet but can possibly work something out with a neighbouring cafe (please email us at audreylouisa@gmail.com)

WHAT TO BRING
If you like bring a pillow sit on, and some snacks to share (but it’s no must)

Asian Women for Equality Presents Zoë Goodall

Zoë Goodall will discuss her thesis, which examined the question, "How was the issue of Indigenous women in prostitution represented at the deliberations over Canada's Bill C-36?" As well as discussing the findings of her thesis, Zoë, will discuss how her perspective of the Canadian deliverations was shaped by her position as an Australian. In Australia, there are similar issues to Canada in relation to the sex industry, however, the discussion is affected by inconsistent legistlation and decades of legalisation/decriminalisation.

FILM SCREENING: Anna Akhmatova: The Life of a Poet

Kicking off our Fall/Winter Film Program is Anna Akhmatova: The Life of a Poet, directed by Helga Landauer, 2008, 59 mins.

Today I have so much to do
I must kill memory once and for all
I must turn soul to stone
I must learn to live again
Unless...Summer's ardent rustling
Is like a festival outside my window.
For a long time I've foreseen this
Brilliant day, deserted house.
